STOMP (Thursday 1-28-10)

Hey STOMP Staffers!

Today was a good day. I was really surprised that we had a good turnout even though they got out at school hours earlier because it was finals week AND that they don't even have school tomorrow! It shows that they really do enjoy coming to STOMP. Good JOB MENTORS!! We are doing something right !!! =) I really appreciate everyone's work. I was just thinking today how I would feel so drained after every STOMP day because only a few of us were able to go. But I'm glad we stuck with it (shout outs to Ashley, Russell, Nas, Ricardo!) because STOMP is really improving! Still room for improvement of course...but progress has definitely been made.

Anyway...about today...I had a good conversation with my mentee Tony about school and life in general. Today was really chill because they just finished finals so we all take it easy.

Shout out to Evelyn who started playing games with them to keep them engaged!! Go head girl! I really appreciated that. Thanks for Whitney and Jess for getting the snacks! And thanks again to Whitney for driving and Kameko too!! Russell and Avelino...you two are so great! Thanks for being positive male role models. And Mags...I can so tell that your mentee loves you =) And Kiara, way to hold it down, I noticed that you kept your mentees busy the whole time.

Everyone is great. Yay for STOMP!!

peace,
moo

  2. Wednesday 2/3/2010 Update
Today, though it was loud at times and hard to get them to settle down, was all and all a good day. People had successful one on ones and good discussion with the students. We ran out of time in terms of our actitvies so we werent able to do a Black History Worksheet I had printed out that had about 15 questions about Black First like inventions and monumental moments that went along with an 8 page timeline that they were going to get in groups to talk about.

What we did do was do homework and i loved it one kid, whos name I dont know, said it was to loud and he really wanted to get his homework done so shout outs to Lou for helping him the entire time. We did group work with the article Mis Education of a Negro and talked about the origins of Black History Month and Carter G. Woodsoon. They really like group activites with prizes so be sure to bring candy. It was a beautiful day because while going over the article Christian had a light bulb moment about why history is only told in one perspective and what empowering someone through history can do.

So you may want to ask him to sum up what the gist of the article is and ask someone else that was there what mis education means, why the negro is seen as mis educated and what learn to think actually means and why we find it important for them to know, maybe just as a little refresher before starting the game.

I think we are really starting to get somewhere with them and I think the relationships that are developing are really beautiful so GO TEAM!!
