STOMP was a bit challenging on Thursday but of course always rewarding. There seemed to be a lot going on with some of the students... like one of the guys was having "girl problems" and Russell and Joie had to have talks with him. They were kind of loud during the Jeopardy activity but at least some of them really enjoyed it and learned something from it.
I got to talk with my mentees Tony and Briauna. Both of them are great, I am so thankful for them!
The only reminders I have are to give them the blue weekly report sheets and have them fill those out and return them to you weekly.
Any mentors have anything else to add??

Okay so I don't know how to post a new blog but I wanted to write about Wed. 2/10/10.
ReplyDeleteThe students were actually productive today. Most of them had something to do. And if they didn't we had brought them an article (well parts of Angela Davis's book entitled Are Prisons Obsolete?) Since most of the students didn't want to read the article they opted to pull out their own homework (which magically reappeared in their backpacks. But after everyone had gotten some time to work on homework or for those who had their mentors there to meet with them we got to get back together and discuss the article. And I was really happy by how engaged they were. We talked a little about the Prison Industrial Complex and the way black and brown communities are policed. we talked about the different sentencing laws for crack vs. cocaine and the students seemed really engaged. Today's discussion shows how the students really want to learn more about the social structures that are put in place to disadvantage the majority and privilege the minority (number wise not the race). So Ashley and I were saying how it would be great to show the Letter to the President video and I also have another reading that ties into the discussion and the question asked by Christian (he asked why some people chose to deal if they know the consequences for selling drugs). But we also kind of ran out of time at the end so we didn't get a chance to really get in too deep in the discussion. So I think it is great if we could continue on this discussion.
Student Update:
Josh said he had a project due in Biology soon about the human body.
Dashia: She was working on her spanish homework and she was doing well today.
Demetrious: he walked in late so I didnt get to really talk to him for long.
So all the best tomorrow.
